Roe v. Wade

America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts—a child—as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience.

Fr. Jim, in his homily from last Sunday, quoted a statistic that makes my stomach turn:

In the 31 years since the Roe v. Wade decision, over 45 million children have been aborted. That’s over seven times as many Jewish people as died in the Nazi holocaust, and this is going on in the midst of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Forty-five million children who will never see the sun, or chase a dog, or grow to adulthood, or fall in love, or share their daily bread.

Pray for an end to abortion.

  1. i really don’t understand abortion, i try hard not to be judgemental against women who believe it to be a good thing. but it is such an atrocity to kill a soul driven, living, aware being and think of it as a necessary right..i can’t see how it is justified.

beyond this, what of the souls of these children? in the traditional Catholic sense, they do not know God..but they have no chance to know him. they are denied any human help/experience in realizing God, which is the natural sense of things. does the Creator then step in for these children?

  2. I would assume they would be the same as unbaptized babies/children. According to the Catechism:

1261 As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,”[63] allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church’s call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism.

  3. I believe God judges us based on what is in our hearts. A fetus or a baby or a young child still has a pure heart.

Just look at the Beatitudes, like Matthew 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

  4. Mea — I believe you are right not trying to be judgmental against those who believe abortion is okay. My response is to pray for them. Not so much that I hope that they will see their sin, but that the light of Christ will enter their hearts.

Some pro-life supporters can sound judgmental and condemning. It might be best if we try to act like Jesus with mercy and compassion. Remember what Jesus said to the woman about to be stoned for adultery—go and sin no more; I will not condemn you.
