Please pray for a stay of execution for Hung Thanh Le. He is scheduled for execution on Thursday in Oklahoma.
Regardless of your position on capital punishment, there seems to be some issues within this case. To quote Amnesty International:
The trial was riddled with prosecutorial misconduct. The prosecution made inflammatory remarks, mis-stated the law as it related to mitigating evidence, referred to facts that were not in evidence and repeatedly dehumanized the defendant in arguing for execution. Oklahoma County prosecutors have repeatedly been criticized by the appeal courts. In Hung Thanh Le’s case, a federal judge wrote in 2002 that “at some point the repeated violation of ethical responsibility threatens the violation of our justice system”. Despite finding that the prosecution’s arguments were “improper” and “irrelevant”, the appeal courts have allowed Hung Thanh Le’s death sentence to stand. It is left to the clemency authorities to provide a remedy.
In fact, the clemency board voted for the first time in Oklahoma history to unanimously commute a death sentence, but Gov. Brad Henry has set aside the recommendation and denied clemency.

Update: The execution has been delayed until March 23. The Vietnamese government requested more time to review the case file.

I’d like to go to the rally on Wed., but I do have concern that many of those I have talked to are going only to get out of class. While others such as Lewis are going due to real conviction. What is your advice Sir?

Yes, I will keep him in my prayers. I am extremely opposed to capital punishment. I have a son who is a criminal attorney and another who is a physician—and they, too, oppose capital punishment. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Andrew — Follow your beliefs and convictions. You have to do what is right for you. Do not worry about the mixed motives of others. How many people have a single, pure motive for anything? Besides, maybe they will learn something at the ralley…

Dear Governor Henry,
Subject: Hung Thanh Le Case
This is a formal request that the State of Oklahoma grant a stay on the execution of Hung Thanh Le, now scheduled for March 23, 2004. I have serious concerns about the fairness and accuracy of death penalty sentencing.
Although my sympathies are with the relatives and friends of the victim, to execute Hung Thanh Le would be a miscarriage of justice.
I certainly welcome the reprieve you granted to Hung on the 26th of February, but I regret at your decision not to reconsider your rejection
of the state Pardon and Parole Board’s unanimous recommendation in Hung Thanh Le’s case. I now urge you once again to reconsider your decision, in the interest of justice and the reputation of the State of Oklahoma.
Furthermore, “eye for eye and tooth for tooth” justice fashion should not be used in a decent society where many more effective and humane methods of correction are at our disposal. Following are the reasons:
1) If we agree “eye for eye and tooth for tooth” is the absolute justice, why would we not punish the drug traffickers by forcing them inhale heroine and leave them suffer from the effect of the drug? Of course it is wrong to educate the detainees that what they did was wrong by doing the same thing to them. It is ENOUGH to tell them that what they did was wrong. And the MOST EFFECTIVE way to convey this message to them is to show them that we, the good citizens, would never do that without any exception, period. Then we might want to restrain them for a while in the prisons to make sure they would not commit the crime again.
2) If you don’t want your kids to hit each other, you must not hit them, period. The analogy is if the government doesn’t want their citizens to kill each other, the government must not kill its citizens without any exception. Instead, we should use the millions of dollars to process the executions to hire psychiatrists and psychologists to come to the prisons to teach them why they should not kill.
3) All crimes committed have a deep root in the past of the condemned. One of the roots, obviously, stems from the governments. The governments keep resorting to death penalty as the NECESSARY means to stop serious crimes. Unfortunately, the SERIOUSNESS is so relative. For Hung Thanh Le, stealing $10,000 from his poor family is as SERIOUS as stealing billions of dollars out of Worldcom or Enron. He also did not have enough knowledge about the legal system in the US and how it can intervene and get that $10,000 back to him. So he concluded, with a lot of emotion, that injuring his victim was NECESSARY to secure his family and his asset. So to eliminate crimes, we must first ELIMINATE THE ROOTS, not the leaves. On the contrary, the leaves deserve MERCY and UNDERSTANDING.
4) Actually, shame on us if we have no better way to solve a problem than what the condemned used.
Therefore, I call on you to provide the leadership Oklahoma needs to avoid participating in the culture of violence and to bring your state into line with the global trend towards abolition of this outdated and dehumanizing punishment. It is only by not killing can we effectively teach our citizens not to kill and radically break the vicious circle of killing.

Firstly, please pray for that my mother was cheated by Mr. Kwong, Mr Ho, Hin Chai and Anna last year, she went to a company and worked as an Office assistant, but they cheated my mother, and compelled my mother to give her money out to them(they cheated my mother that the money was used for investment, and the investment was failured), and went away, thank God for that the policemen arrested Mr. Kwong now, but the Mr. Ho , Hin Chai and Anna were still not arrested, please pray for that God can help the policemen in the investigation, and find the evidence to accuse the Mr. Kwong and his helper in the judiciary court, thank God for that the policemen sent us several letters till now about that the investigation is in the progressing, please pray for that God can move their heart, Mr. Kwong , Mr. Ho, Hin Chai and Anna will regret about that they cheated my mother, and they can have pity on my mother , and return the money back to my mother , thank you.
Secondly, please pray for that my brother was hurt his leg in the working place, please pray for that my brother can be rehabilitated soon, and he can be rehabilitated completely, and please pray for that he can be maintained in his job, please pray for that God can cure his leg, and protect his job, and give him good health, his boss will provide the sick leave fees for him till he totally restored his health, thank you.
Thirdly, (1) Please pray for that I can improve my working efficiency, and please pray for and thank God for that God can protect my family members and I will not to be hurt by my workmates and supervisors in order that I can have psychological health during working and I will have a stable job after my contract due, and pray for and thank God for that I will not be suffered in the marital problems in my job. Please pray for and thank God for that I can have talent to do a job if I will not further the contract later. (2)Please pray for that I can restore my psychological health, because I am always blame myself about the sin I committed when I was young, I am afraid that God will punish me about the sin I committed when I was young, please pray for that I can have biblical mind to know will God punish me one day or not, so that I can live out good witnesses and have peace to face the punishment from God one day. (3)Please pray for and thank God for that I will not be suffered in the marital problems, so that I can seek the kingdom and the righteousness of God first, and have a spiritual growth up, and I will not regret about the decision I made in this marriage this life, that I will only choose the Christian girlfriend that was arranged by God, please pray for that if God had not prepare a Christian girlfriend for me, help me to keep alone whole life, so that I will not be hurt again in order that I can restore my psychological health and have a spiritual growth up. (4)Please pray for that the son of my brother will not hurt himself, my brother and my sister will not be suffered in the marital problems , my sister can have good psychological health, and we can maintain a good relationship, we will not be hurt by the husband of my sister and the wife of my brother, so that my mother and I can help my sister and my brother to accept the Jesus Christ.
