I desire…

From today’s Gospel reading, this seems to say an awful lot in just five words:
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.

See also the words of an Old Testament prophet, “For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.” (Hosea 6:6)
