Can I Get a Bird?

My oldest child, a senior at the high school where I teach, sent me an email this afternoon asking me if she could get a bird, this bird in particular:

[Lilac-breasted Roller]

My first reaction was that the photo was a fake. But no, it is a real bird (although this one is a little more plump than most). It is called a Liliac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudata). It is native to mid-to-southern Africa. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe.

What a beautiful bird!

  1. What a beautiful bird!

  2. Believe it or not, I have seen a Lilac Breasted Roller in person in Kenya. When I was 12, about 20 years ago. There was another pretty kind called “Red-Cheeked Cordon Bleu” (see http://www.kenyabirds.org.uk/c_bleu.htm). My 8th grade English teacher thought I was making the name up.

  3. Oh, that is lovely! God is such an artist, making things that are so wildly colorful! :)
